Homelessness in Langley

According to the 2020 Metro Vancouver Point -in-Time (Homelessness) Count, over 200 people were experiencing homelessness in Langley; inclusive of the City of Langley and Township of Langley. This is double the rate compared tot he 2014 Point-in-Time Count, and the third highest count in Metro Vancouver.

This number is not inclusive of the ‘hidden homelessness’, which describes people that are in other types of temporary and vulnerable housing situations - often youth, women, and indigenous people.

In addition, the 2020 Point-in-Time count revealed that Langley has a shelter deficit, where only half of people experiencing homelessness had available space in temporary shelters - compared to an average of three-quarters in Metro Vancouver.

The Response

There are numerous organizations in Langley that directly serve people experiencing homelessness as part of their mandate.

Langley’s resources include three supportive housing locations specifically for people who would otherwise homeless, provided by Stepping Stone Community Services, Lookout Housing and Health Society, and Salvation Army Gateway of Hope. These are all currently at capacity.

Due to capacity restraints, several hotels in Langley continued to be used as temporary sheltering options, but funding is due to end in early 2024.
